Model Variants
The Nintendo DS family includes four hardware revisions: the original DS (2004, "Phat"), the DS Lite (2006, slimmer with brighter screens), the DSi (2008, removed GBA slot, added cameras), and the DSi XL (2009, larger screens). All four models play standard DS cartridges, but only the original DS and DS Lite support GBA games.
Hardware Vulnerabilities
DS cartridges use flash memory for saves (not battery-backed), meaning save degradation is gradual rather than sudden. However, infrared-equipped cartridges (Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver, Black/White) contain a CR1025 battery for the IR function — when this dies, the IR feature stops working but saves remain intact.
Regional Lockouts
Nintendo DS games are region-free — any DS cartridge works on any DS console worldwide. However, DSi-enhanced titles (like Pokémon Black/White) have region-locking when played on a DSi or 3DS. Always check for the "TWL-" prefix on the cartridge label to identify DSi-enhanced games.
